On Wednesday 2nd March 2011, Beyond Green hosted the second in a series of themed workshops on planning and designing for sustainable development and community for our project in Broadland, on the northern edge of Norwich. The workshop took place at St Cuthbert’s Church in Sprowston – a wonderful venue which we were kindly permitted to use, and complemented by delicious, locally sourced canapés from Toast catering.
The theme for the evening was “Making town” and consisted of a short presentation by Paul Murrain, senior design advisor to Beyond Green, followed by a panel discussion and an open debate about the principles, disciplines, processes and patterns that underpin successful ‘places’. Paul’s talk gave his illustrated thoughts on Universal principles and traditions that inform great places, examples from Norfolk and further afield and lessons for planning and future development in Broadland, Norwich and Norfolk.
The panel discussion was led by Professor Tim O’Riordan and Andrew Dickie, Reader at the Parish of Sprowston and Beeston St Andrew.
